Maria Basti home

Created in
1984

With a capacity of
11 adult women

And
7 staffs

Maria Basti was first founded as a home for disabled children. It later became dedicated to adult women with disabilities. This home welcomes women who have no one left to take care of them. They come here to spend their entire life. Maria Basti is a real home for them rather than a “center for disabled people”.
xx
Women spend the day doing activities depending on their capabilities. The morning is dedicated to House Work : cleaning, tidying, etc. In the afternoon they do manual work such as jute weaving or candle making while others enjoy a time of meditation. Each evening is different : dance, story telling, TV, drawing, etc.
Some women have lived here for more than 30 years now. Each outing is the occasion for new meetings and memories that break out the routine.

MINI
Mini is 19 and arrived in Maria Basti in early 2023 after spending some years in Bakuabari. She suffers from severe hypotonia.
This lack of strength prevents her from holding things or from walking. Even if she can only communicate through sounds, Mini loves to laugh. In fact she laughs all the time. She loves to be surrounded by people and be able to touch their hands or faces. She likes to discover new activities and can spend several hours in one activity.
Mini is a great positive strength for people around her.

ANTONIA DI
Antonia Di has worked for 20 years in a school as a Hindi teacher. During Covid, the school closed down.
One day at mass a nun talked to her about the different HSP Homes. As a result of this meeting, she arrived in Maria Basti two years ago.
She says she likes to take care of the women in this house, helping them and supporting them because she loves them from the bottom of her heart.
Thank you Didi for everything!

MONGOLA
Mongola has lived in many different HSP homes. First in Lalkuthi and then in the Jalpaiguri homes : Bakuabari, Mogradangi and now in Maria Basti.
Mongola has cerebral palsy which prevents her from walking or standing straight. However she loves to dance with her arms and has a real sense of rhythm. What she likes above all is the human connection, she likes to smile, laugh and tell stories.
Maria Basti is her home and all the people there are her family, she says that she loves them tremendously.
