This October, we received the visit of Maria and Christine in Jalpaiguri. They are very good friends and have been visiting since 2003. They agreed to talk about their long lasting friendship with us:
"20 years ago (2003) I heard about HSP from our pedatrician Dr. Helga Wiedemann (she often went to Kolkata for supporting German Doctors). She showed me pictures of children’s homes in Jalpaiguri. I was very impressed and decided to go to India and visit HSP together with my daughter Britta. At that time she was a graduate to become a teacher for mental handicapped children. Myself, I’m an educated physiotherapist. So we both hoped that we could help and work in the homes with didis and dadas. At that place the two of us stayed for 5 weeks, and my daughter even extended her stay for 4 more weeks. She returned again to the homes in 2004 with her friend Babsi. I tried to make physio excercises with didis and dadas and also supported indoor and outdoor physiotherapy. My daughter mainly worked in Bakuabari, teaching mental handicapped children, together with Daliya. Her friend Babsi worked in Maria Basti.
Together with Anna, my daughter in law, I went another time to HSP in 2012. She too liked to stay with children, didis and dadas. During that time we went to zoo, botanical garden and science city in Kolkata.
In 2008 my friend Maria asked me, to go with her to India again and so all in all we together went to HSP 4 times (2003,2008,2012, and October 2023).
Together with Maria we stayed in Kolkata as well as in Jalpaiguri two times. There, we could take part in the work of German Doctors in the slums and in TB-hospital and children ward. This was very impressing for us.
We regulary have been sending money over the years. Whenever we came to India we brought money for the children homes, wheelchairs and a lot of other items for all. With the money (donated by our families and friends) we buy a lot of needed things. This time we bought two totos, two computers, mixi, shelves and we donated money for painting Jordighi home. A highlight, and the most important for us, was a picnic with all children, didis and dadas in a funpark. We ordered special food and cold drinks, ice cream, paid for the entrance fee and for the busses. We all enjoyed the day and were utmost satisfied to see the happy children, didis and dadas.
Since the last stay, especially the flight as well as the climate, was very exhausting for us, we decided not return to India again. We will always be with you and HSP.
Furthermore we’ll continue our donations. Maria just started to send money now for supporting foot operations.
Working and staying in HSP children‘s homes has always been a big pleasure and satisfaction for us. It was a great experience for our life to see how living is possible with less money, less consumption and also less orthopaedic aid for physically handicapped people. We saw a lot of children, who are much more independent than children with the same handicap in Europe.

20 ans d'amitié avec Howrah South Point
En octobre, nous avons reçuà Jalpaiguri la vite de Maria et Christine. Ce sont de grandes amies qui nous rendent visite depuis 2003. Elles ont accepté de parler de leur longue amitié avec HSP.
"Il y a 20 ans (2003), j'ai entendu parler d'HSP par notre pédiatre, le Dr. Helga Wiedemann (elle venait souvent à Calcutta avec les German Doctors). Elle m'a montré des photos des foyers pour enfants à Jalpaiguri. J'ai été très impressionnée et j'ai décider de venir en Inde pour visiter HSP avec ma fille Britta. A cette époque, elle venait d'avoir son diplôme pour être éducatrice auprès des enfants atteints de handicap mental. Moi-même, je suis kinésithérapeute. Nous espérions toutes les deux pouvoir aider et travailler dans les foyers avec les didis et dadas. Pour ce premier voyage, nous sommes restées toutes les deux 5 semaines et ma fille a prolongé son séjour de 4 semaines. Elle est retourné de nouveau dans les foyers avec son amie Babsi en 2004. De mon côté, j'ai fait des exercices de physiothérapie avec les didis et dadas, et j'ai aidé les départements indoor et outdoor de physiothérapie. Ma fille a principalement travaillé à Bakuabari avec Daliya di pour enseigner les enfants atteints de handicap mental. Son amie Babsi a travaillé à Maria Basti.
Avec ma belle-fille Anna, je suis venue de nouveau à HSP en 2012. Elle aussi a beaucoup apprécié son séjour avec les enfants, didis et dadas. Lors de cette visite, nous sommes allés au zoo, au jardin botanique et à la cité des sciences de Calcutta.
En 2008, mon amie Maria m'a demandé de l'accompagner une nouvelle fois en Inde. Ainsi, en tout et pour tout, nous sommes venues 4 fois à HSP (2003, 2008, 2012 et octobre 2023).
Avec Maria, nous avons séjourné à Calcutta et Jalpaiguri. Là, nous avons participé au travail des German Doctors dans les bidonvilles et dans l'hôpital pour enfants atteints de tuberculose. Cela a été une expérience très forte pour nous.
Au cours des années, nous avons régulièrement envoyé de l'argent à HSP. A chaque fois que nous sommes venues en Inde, nous avons apporté de l'argent pour les foyers, des fauteuils roulants et autres objets. Avec l'argent (donné par nos familles et amis), nous avons acheté sur place de nombreuses nécessités. Cette fois, nous avons acheté 2 totos, 2 ordinateurs, des mixi, des étagères, et nous avons financé de quoi repeindre le foyer de Jordighi. Un point fort de notre voyage, et le plus important selon nous a été un picnic avec tous les enfants, didis et dadas dans un parc d'attractions. Nous avions prévu de bonnes choses à manger, des boissons fraiches, de la glace, nous avons payé les entrées et les bus. Nous avons tous profité de la journée, et Maria et moi avons été particulièrement heureuses de voir la joie des enfants, didis et dadas.
Comme ce dernier séjour, et plus particulièrement les vols et le climat, a été très fatiguant pour nous, nous avons décidé de ne plus revenir en Inde. Mais nous serons toujours avec HSP.
De plus, nous allons continuer notre soutien financier. Maria vient juste d'envoyer de l'argent pour des opérations orthopédiques.
Travailler et séjourner à HSP dans les foyers pour enfants a toujours été un grand plaisir pour nous. Cela a été une grande expérience pour nos propres vies de voir comment il était possible de faire avec moins d'argent, de consommation, d'aide orthopédique et moins d'aide pour les personnes atteintes de handicap physique. Nous avons vu beaucoup d'enfants qui sont beaucoup plus autonomes que les enfants atteints d'un handicap similaire en Europe.
